The regatta kicked off with a nice party and a skipper meeting on Thursday night. The forecast looked promising for the next few days and it looked like the regatta was going to be a success. When everyone showed up on Friday the breeze was around 10-12 knots but from the North West making the course very hard to sail with big puffs and shifts coming down the course from every direction. The formula fleet was sent out and went in to sequence almost immediately. Unfortunately half way through the sequence the wind died and the race was abandoned and we were sent in. After lunch the wind started to pick up again and we were sent out in about 13 knots of breeze that shifted to the North so it was much steadier.
The first race was the lightest of the day. The pro fleet quickly shot out from the main pack with Gonzalo Costa-Hoevel of Argentina coming in first. After the first race the wind picked up a little and we quickly went into sequence again. The second race was sailed in solid breeze again with Paulo dos Reis from Brazil coming in first. The day was wrapped up with good home cooked dinner! Day two started out like the previous day…. very cold and a little breeze. Instead of sending the formula fleet out to try a race they held us on shore and got races in for the other classes. After lunch the wind filled in nicely and we were sent out. Just like the previous day the wind was anywhere from 11 to 15 knots and out of the North so it was steady across the course.
We did the first two races back to back with good steady breeze. Paulo dos Reis won both races putting him in a solid first place. We went in for a short break and waited for the other fleets to get a few races off. When the formula fleet was sent back out for the last race of the day and it was lighter than the previous races, but there was still plenty of wind. Gonzalo won the race with Micah Buzianis in second. After the racing we were treated to a delicious buffet style party at the Raddison Hotel.
The third and last day was forecasted for much lighter conditions and when we showed up we found out that they were right, it was light. Formula was on hold for the morning but after lunch the wind was picking up. We were sent out and sailed the first race in solid plaining conditions but it was very light. The wind was slowly dyeing throughout out the race but held steady enough for us to finish.
Wojtek Brzozowski of Poland won this race. The last race of the regatta was about 7-11 knots with most of the fleet having a lot of trouble getting off the start line in the pros dirty air. As the wind got lighter a good number of the fleet were having trouble plaining all the time.
To clinch his first place spot in the event Paulo Dos Reis won the last race. Right behind Paulo in the event was Gonzalo Costa-Hoevel, and Gabriel Browne in third. The racing was wrapped up with a excellent lunch/dinner with an awards ceremony following. The regatta was lots of fun and a great learning experience getting to sail with all the pros!
